It’s a Balance: Academic Challenge and Authentic Support
Take a moment to reflect on your journey as a learner. For some, the mind might drift to the warmth of an elementary classroom or the rigor of a college lecture hall. Others might recall mastering a life skill like skiing or navigating the challenges of parenting. Regardless of the context, moments of deep and meaningful learning share common traits: they are challenging, they offer opportunities to learn from mistakes, they feel relevant, and they are guided by someone who truly understands the learner.
At LuHi, our mission to glorify God by educating young people in body, mind, and spirit is at the heart of how we design these meaningful learning experiences. Middle and high school are formative years of rapid brain development, and it’s essential that students engage in opportunities that stretch their capacities and build resilience. Growth often comes from struggle, and LuHi educators are committed to helping students navigate these challenges with the right balance of rigor and support.
Learning Through Intentional Preparation
During a recent chapel service focused on Advent, Mr. Reno asked three students to reflect on how they prepare for academics, the arts, and athletics. Their insights were both practical and profound. Each student highlighted the value of consistent practice, deliberate strategies, and seeking support when needed. None claimed effortless success. Instead, they emphasized the importance of intentional effort in achieving their goals—a lesson that resonates far beyond the classroom.
In today’s fast-paced world of viral videos and polished social media highlights, young people often see the success of others without the context of hard work and perseverance behind it. At LuHi, we are intentional about teaching students the value of persistence and the joy that comes from conquering challenges.
Conversations with Students and Teachers
To dive deeper, we spoke with students and teachers about their experiences at LuHi. We asked questions like:
Here’s what we learned:
Core Goal: Developing Critical Thinking Skills
Both students and teachers emphasized critical thinking as a cornerstone of learning at LuHi. Students shared that beyond mastering course content, they’ve learned how to approach challenges with confidence—a skill that will serve them in college and beyond. Teachers expressed their commitment to fostering problem-solving abilities, ensuring students are equipped to handle an ever-changing world.
Key Attribute: Being Known
The importance of relationships emerged as a recurring theme. Teachers spoke about the value of getting to know each student, enabling them to offer personalized support during tough times. Students highlighted how smaller class sizes create a sense of being seen and understood, empowering them to ask questions and engage deeply in their education.
Key Attribute: Foundation in Faith
Faith is woven into every aspect of life at LuHi. Students shared how their spiritual growth bolsters their confidence and willingness to take risks in the classroom. By integrating faith and academics, we nurture resilience and a deeper sense of purpose in our students.
Building a Foundation for the Future
As a college preparatory school, LuHi is unwavering in its commitment to preparing students for the next chapter of their lives. By believing in their capacity to learn and grow, we provide a balance of challenging academics and robust support. Together, families and our school community form a team dedicated to each student’s unique path, fostering excellence and independence.
At LuHi, we’re not just teaching students to succeed academically; we’re equipping them with the skills, values, and faith to thrive in every aspect of life.
